Con riferimento a Le avventure di Gordon Pym, di Edgar Allan Poe, Bufalino suggerisce un ritorno che forse non c’è stato. Il diario di Gordon Pym racconta dei suoi viaggi pieni di peripezie nei mari del mondo,ma termina in modo brusco e sbrigativo, privato dei capitoli finali, quindi con un esito incerto, malgrado alluda alla possible morte del protagonista. In questo confine tra reale e irreale, tra vita e morte, tra certezza e ambiguità, non resta che una nave fantasma, evanescente, ormai logora, lisa fino alla trasparenza, testimone e compagna di vicissitudini e pericoli, che approda nell’ultimo mare luttuoso.

With reference to The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe, Bufalino suggests a return that perhaps did not happen. Gordon Pym’s journal recounts his adventure-filled voyages across the seas, but ends abruptly and hastily, deprived of its final chapters, leaving an uncertain outcome, despite hinting at the possible death of the protagonist. In this borderland between the real and the unreal, between life and death, between certainty and ambiguity, all that remains is a ghost ship, evanescent, now worn, faded to near transparency, witness and companion to hardships and dangers, coming to rest upon one last mournful sea.
