Tebe, luogo altamente simbolico, la città di Edipo e della colpa, scenari di maledizione familiare. Compresa la vicenda de I Sette contro Tebe della trilogia di Eschilo. Eteocle e Polinice, figli di Edipo, in guerra tra di loro, sette guerrieri contro sette, e i fratelli che si uccideranno a vicenda, una maledizione che continua. Ho immaginato l’Ottavo come un deus ex machina mancato, colui che avrebbe potuto risolvere la situazione senza spargimenti di sangue. Ma che non poté, o non volle, intervenire. Nel dipinto è un personaggio misterioso, con crepe sulla tunica, indici di sofferenza per la propria sconfitta morale. Sullo sfondo, il coro affranto, vestito a lutto. E sul muro bianco, una colata orrenda narra l’ignominia per ciò che non è stato evitato.

 

Eight in Thebes 2023-26

Thebes, a highly symbolic place, the city of Oedipus and of guilt, the setting of familial curses, including the story of Seven Against Thebes from Aeschylus’s trilogy. Eteocles and Polynices, sons of Oedipus, at war with one another; seven warriors against seven, and the brothers who will kill each other: a curse that continues. I imagined the Eighth as a failed deus ex machina, the one who could have resolved the situation without bloodshed, but who could not, or would not, intervene. In the painting he is a mysterious figure, with cracks in his tunic, signs of suffering for his own moral defeat. In the background, the grief-stricken chorus, dressed in mourning. And on the white wall, a horrifying cascade narrates the ignominy of what was not prevented.
